Bible Reading Plan

GUARDING OUR MOUTHS
BY VONNIE HIEBER, NORTHWEST REGIONAL DIRECTOR

"We need to watch what we say. We are canceling our prayers." These words spoken by a covenant keeper show how careful we need to be when we say something. God talks to us about the words we speak in Matthew 12:37: "For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced." (AMP) Often, in a desire to tell someone what we are doing and why, we speak out condemning words and cancel our prayers.

We put ourselves in the hands of the enemy when we do not guard our mouths and words. Proverbs 18:21 (AMP) tells us that, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or for life]."

While standing for the healing of our marriages we often look at the time element and pray what we think we should pray or what others have prayed. We talk about circumstances instead of listening to the Holy Spirit and praying what God wants us to pray. When we speak what the Word of God says about our spouses we have a well of life. "The mouth of the [uncompromisingly] righteous man is a well of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence." (Proverbs 10:11 AMP)

Joseph could have been very bitter, resentful, and full of hate when his brothers sold him into slavery. He could have spoken evil of them but did not. Instead he forgave them and served the Lord with his whole heart; he was able to see reconciliation for his whole family. We need to avoid speaking evil words over our spouses; we need to speak what God's Word says about them. "Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the mind and healing to the body." (Proverbs 16:24 AMP)

According to Dakes there are twelve things which describe the tongue:

  • little member.

  • boasts of great things.

  • sets a fire.

  • world of iniquity.

  • defiles the whole body.

  • the course of nature.

  • untamable.

  • unruly evil.

  • full of deadly poison.

  • used to bless God and curse men.

  • capable of good conversation.

  • capable of bitter strife.

Our tongue can be used as we desire. "There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." (Proverbs 12:18 AMP) "On the lips of him who has discernment skillful and godly wisdom is found, but discipline and the rod are for the back of him who is without sense and understanding." (Proverbs 10:13 AMP) "A life, a home, a family is built through skillful and godly wisdom and by understanding it is established and then filled with all precious and pleasant riches." (Proverbs 24:2-4) Bridle your tongue so that it may speak only what is godly and right. What we said yesterday is what we have today.

We need to talk TO our mountain, commanding it into the sea, and not talk ABOUT it. Remember, sweet lips increase learning in both speaker and listener.

OUT OF THE MOUTH OF "DEAR ABBY"

Here is the world-famous columnist's reply to IN LOVE IN HOUSTON who wrote about her involvement with a married man (from the fall of 1991).

"Send your married man back to his wife and children, and tell him to stay there. You can't build happiness on the misery of others. And by the way, nobody 'falls in love' with a person who is married; they either kick the fence down or climb over it."
